Inference Activities, CER, Mad Libs, Directions Challenges, and More!

Hello Teachers,

Anyone else feeling it right now? I’m exhausted, bruh.

But spring break is close—and the finish line is starting to come into view. We got this.

As the school year slowly winds down, I hope you’re taking care of yourself and finding small wins each day.

Here are a few resources I created this week. I hope they make your life just a little bit easier.

Mid-Year Directions Challenge: Reset & Reflect

Many students struggle with reading longer, more detailed passages. That’s exactly why I intentionally give them opportunities to practice it.

This “Directions Challenge” is designed to build that skill. Students must carefully read through a dense set of instructions and follow each step to successfully complete the task.

It’s a simple but powerful way to strengthen focus, attention to detail, and independence.

8-Sentence CER Paragraph Challenge!

At my school, we use Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) to help students structure their arguments. This activity is designed to “take off the training wheels” of CER by showing students that strong argumentation doesn’t have to follow a rigid formula—there’s flexibility in how ideas can be organized and expressed.

The “Unexpected Adventure” Mad Lib

Inference Detectives!

Here is an activity designed to help students practice making inferences and using textual evidence to clearly explain their reasoning.

Hello Teachers, Stephen King once described the exhaustion of teaching as feeling like he had “jumper cables clamped to [his] brain” by the end of the week. I feel that—except my “jumper cable” moment hits around Wednesday. By Friday, I need full roadside assistance. Even the best teachers get overstimulated. This isn’t a classroom management issue. It isn’t a failure of the teacher. It’s the environment. This time of year, the noise, the pace, and the constant demands start to pile up....

The Creative Teacher Newsletter “I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.” — John Steinbeck My Story After four years of teaching, I felt stuck. Professional development bored me. Student behavior drained me. I showed up, did what I was told, and survived each day. I didn’t hate teaching, but I didn’t love it...
