Write a Story That Takes Place in the Mountains ⛰️

Hello Teachers,

Mountains–the muse of myth, metaphor, and moments of wonder. As Robert Macfarlane writes in Mountains of the Mind:

“Mountains return to us the priceless capacity for wonder which can so insensibly be leached away by modern existence, and they urge us to apply that wonder to our own everyday lives.”

In the mountains, movement is sharper. Light slithers, bends, reflects, and moves wildly alongside peaks, trees, and trails. Clear skies and heavenly white clouds can transform into towering walls of black thunderclouds in minutes. The wind screams, rivers roar, and cracking ice echoes through the valleys. In fact, everything is clearer and louder in the mountains.

Mount Olympus, for the ancient Greeks, was the home of many of the Olympian gods—Zeus, Hera, Athena, and more. In the Jewish tradition, Mount Zion was revered as a holy mountain—the dwelling place of God. And while mountains symbolically connect heaven to earth, they have also disconnected humans. Mountains are often home to a tapestry of languages and ethnic groups.

Your mission for the following task is to write a story that takes place in the mountains. Dare to capture the mountains in your own unique way. Perhaps you can write about a love story, a war, a battle, a tribal feud, a bear attack, or a lone mountain man on a journey to find inner peace. Just be sure you give readers a setting that is mysterious, majestic, and mountainous.

So once again, your mission is this: write a story that takes place in the mountains.
