Add Punctuation to the Paragraph About Lionel Messi ⚽

Hello Teachers,

Teaching students that a period signals a long pause and a comma signals a short pause can be a useful starting point when teaching punctuation.

It's a simple, intuitive way for students to "hear" how sentences work.

Of course, punctuation does more than mark pauses. Commas organize information and clarify meaning, while periods mark the ends of sentences.

That said, I find that the "pause" explanation gives students something they can grasp and build on.
